Annual BAL Chesstravaganza

This year's annual BAL awards dinner Chesstravaganza was held Thursday, September 6, 2007 at the Mercantile Grill on Pearl Street in Manahttan.

The featured speaker after dinner was 3-time US Champion GM Joel Benjamin, shown in the photo discussing a game on the demonstration board.

First "Play The Masters" Night a Success!

On a cold February night, eighteen courageous BAL players came to fight the two highest rated BAL players over the chess board. GM Pascal Charbonneau and IM Irina Krush took turns in this simul as all 18 participants faced BOTH GM and IM in the same game.

Of the eighteen non-titled players, there were three (Tom Bevington of NYC Transit-1 and Neftalie Alger and Isaias Soriano of BNY-1) who managed draws, leaving GM Charbonneau and IM Krush undefeated (15-0-3) for the evening.

Special thanks to John Gruska who hosted the event at Citigroup. Open to all players on a BAL roster, we hope to have even more participants next year, including at least one who can send the masters home with the taste of defeat.
